Saturday, February 8th 2014 the event Know Your Roots: Natural Hair and the “Movement” was held from 1 PM to 6 PM at Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem, NY. Presented by Locs Revolution, Unveiled Unlocked and the FOLLICLE film production team, the event was a fundraiser for the independent film project FOLLICLE. We came together to engaging the community in an interactive dialogue about culture, identity and what has come to be known as “The Natural Hair Movement.”
This event featured vendors selling goods and services, guest speakers, hair demos and presentation, raffle prizes, complementary food, gift bags for the first 100 attendees and more! Special presentations included Natural Hair Styling presented by celebrity loc stylist Thando Kafele and Lock N’ Chops Natural Hair Salon; Hair Talk with Karen Tappin, founder and CEO of Karen’s Body Beautiful; and a product demonstration by Scarlett Rocourt, founder and CEO of Wonder Curl.
Additional guest speakers and panelist included Carolina Contreras of www.missrizos.com, Shaun Derik, motivational speaker, Osato Dixon, independent film producer, Carl Brown, founder of Beyond Braids and Aleathia Brown, founder of Unveiled Unlocked. Some of the signature vendors were, ORS (formerly Organic Root Stimulator), Pharonic Designs, J. Aubrey Designs, 127 East Cosmetics, MoonRae Jewelry and many more.
In line with the mission of the Follicle film, Know Your Roots sparked critical dialogue around the role of hair in the African diaspora. All proceeds from tickets sales directly contributed to fund FOLLICLE and we are happy to report that we hit our fund raising goal for the event! On behalf of FOLLICLE and the entire planning team, thank you to everyone who supported this event. Please continue to follow and support the film. There is much work to be done and we will go farther together!
